Defy Your Skinny Fat Genetics: Part 1

It is a widely accepted fact that your genetics dictate a huge portion of your life.

Some genetic traits (eye color, height, sex, etc.) are basically set in stone (barring some Frankensteinish surgery) and should be accepted.

But there are many other genetic predispositions that, with the right plan and some determination, can be completely and dramatically altered.

For instance, someone may be predisposed to being weak and skinny. Without a doubt, this person will have a more difficult time achieving and maintaining a strong and muscular physique than someone who is genetically blessed.

Notice that I said, “more difficult” and NOT impossible. With the right plan and some hard work, one can absolutely defy his or her physique’s “genetic pull”.

In fact, I have worked with countless “genetically cursed” people over the years who were able to achieve amazing physiques and impressive levels of strength.

To better illustrate this point, I will use my client and friend, Josh, as an example. When I met Josh, he was weak, skinny and fat all at the same time.

He had trained, dieted, taken supplements, and tried just about everything imaginable in order to transform his physique.  Yet no matter what (and how hard) he tried, this horrible weak-skinny-fat “combo platter” continued to plague him.  Josh was doomed. Or so he thought…

Just when Josh was about to give up, he had heard about me and the results people were achieving at my training center.

Even though he had his doubts, he decided to give me a call. During our consultation, it became clear to me that Josh was “genetically cursed”.

However, this did not deter me in the least. In fact, I love challenges, so I was actually excited to work with him.  I couldn’t wait to “crack his genetic code” and witness another great success story.

Josh’s goals were to get bigger, leaner and stronger — all at the same time. This is no easy task, even for a genetically blessed individual. I told Josh, “It may take a program or two to discover what type of training will lead to the best results for you”. He was on board with my plan, and we were on our way.

Admittingly, Josh was a very tough case. A lot of go-to techniques were completely ineffective on him. It actually took 5 months for us to uncover the correct training and nutritional protocols for Josh.

Once we were dialed in, however, his results were at least as fast and dramatic as anyone else could dream of, regardless of their genetics.  Here are Josh’s results, over the course of the following 12 months:

1) Going from not being able to squat at all to squatting 340 lbs with perfect form.

2) Increasing his bench press from 95 lbs to 255 lbs.

3) Improving his chin-ups from 0 reps to 15 reps.

4) Increasing his deadlift by over 200 lbs

5) Increasing his bodyweight from 155 lbs to 185 lbs.

6) Decreasing body fat percentage by 4%.

7) Improving his game, which led to his being heavily recruited by the entire female population. (Maybe this should be at the top of the list)

Josh’s unlikely progress was so impressive that he literally inspired the whole gym. I hope his story inspires you as well. Here are the take-away lessons from Josh’s story:

a)    Find a coach that you trust and listen to him.

b)    Be persistent and determined to succeed.

c)    Never quit.

d)    Stay positive.

e)    Work hard.

f)     Be consistent.

Josh was a great client in that he trusted me implicitly, worked hard, and followed my nutritional protocol to the letter.  He also never gave up on himself and his goals.

His tenacity, combined with a scientifically sound program specifically designed to help him overcome his genetic challenges, made for a very potent combination.  As a matter of fact, with those ingredients, it’s pretty hard not to succeed.

In part 2 of this series, I will lay out for you Josh’s actual training and nutritional protocol. If these techniques worked on him, you can bet they will work on you too. Stay tuned…

Dedicated to your success,

John Alvino

Wow great article and very motivating, glad you really helped josh out. Unfortunately that’s how most people are when they come to fitness they just give up but it’s stories like these that keep me going. I am aboht 3 weeks into the wildcard workout and really enjoying it. Got any more workouts coming out?

    • John Alvino says:

@Greg Teeter: Hey Greg, glad that you are enjoying the wildcard workout. Keep that “never quit” attitude. It is the key to success in the gym and in life in general. There will be more programs released in 2012. I’ll keep you posted on the blog.

Awesome post! I don’t even know Josh and I feel inspired! Great work Josh, looking forward to part 2 :)

So true, this article rings a bell with me, 6.ft 1full on ecto, heck I still have 10 year old piano playing fingers! after 25 years of trying to change and maintain I finally succeeded in
1)blowing out my L5 disc from all the deads and squats etc. (took 8 months to recover enough to walk again this year, now left with crazy sciatica!)
    2) tearing my left peck when trap bar deadlifting (380lbs) ( still not right several years later)
3)destroying both wrists and elbows from curling and arm work.(constant tendinitis and carpal tunnel pain)
4)wrecking my left shoulder from benching (now painful and clicks permanently)
At 45yrs I sometimes feel like a 60 year old!
Point is you have to be realistic my skinny frame simply does not want to stay at a lean 200lbs + I’ve been destroying it for years trying to force it to be something it was never meant to be, Now I intend to maintain a reasonable 170-180 sub 10% and to hell with the mass!
can’t wait for part 2 it should put your comments in perspective.

    • John Alvino says:

@Mark: Hey Mark, thank you for sharing your story. Hopefully it will help save others from suffering the same fate. As for you, you will be able to maintain a lean, strong and healthy 180 lbs. Way better that being 200 and crippled. Keep us posted!

I love these stories. So much of the advice you find out there just doesn’t work for guys with the dreaded skinny/fat/weak combo. Unfortunately, lots of people give up because they don’t get to work with someone who takes the time to find out what works best for them and then see it through. Some great numbers there for someone who doesn’t have the best genetics.

    Cant wait for part2.

I’m psyched to see this guys progress.

I work at a gym that alot of high school kids “workout” at with just chest and arms days 6 days week and it’s just sad really.

I should post this up on the wall.

Thanks for this great insight John
